Back-Stabin’ Saban
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying in Miami. Sorry, but that’s the deal, guys. I’m….wait, how much money are you holding there? Is that cash? Hmmmm…uh, what was I saying?”
Looks like the Fins need to go fish for a new coach, after Saban decided today to coach the Crimson Tide instead.
In defense of the coach, I don’t think I could walk away from an extra $18.5 million guaranteed - could you? (And if my editors are reading this, that means yes, if ESPN or SI come calling with a similar offer, I’m leaving skid marks in the 451 Press parking lot. Honestly, I wouldn’t be too worried about that one…)
What’s interesting here is the growing appeal for college coaching jobs over pro jobs. With this blockbuster, the difference in compensation between the leagues actually swings to the advantage of the college ranks. Furthermore, coaching college ball means that guys like Pete Carroll, Charlie Weis, and Steve Spurrier can concentrate on recruiting, coaching and having control of their programs. They don’t have to worry about superstar egos, salary caps, and constantly looking over their shoulder to see if they’re going to get whacked.
So good for you, Nick, and best of luck. As for the Dolphins, well, looks like you’re starting from stratch next year (again). If I were a Fins fan, I’d be pretty upset right now. Fortunately, I’m a Pats fan, so I’m delighted.
