NFL Draft Preview: Cincinnati Bengals

Our final team preview comes to us from Josh Kirkendall and his ‘Unofficial Cincinnati Bengals Blog’, the Cincy Jungle.
Josh is partial to Snickers bars, which is good, because that’s all I can afford to pay him with for this article. Thanks Josh!
Cincinnati Bengals 2007 Draft Preview
Since Marvin Lewis took over coaching duties, the Bengals have drafted five defensive backs. Only Madieu Williams and Johnathan Joseph have acclimated into regular starters. Keiwan Ratliff’s career can be summarized with one word, “demotions?. Greg Brooks has reservations at the Injured Reserve motel but fits the Special Teams mold.

Dennis Weathersby’s career never took off because of the most irregular set of rotten luck known in human history. An old friend of mine compared the NFL draft to playing a chance game of Russian roulette. Once you pull the trigger, you have no idea how this will play out. Drafting corners isn’t an easy task and Cincinnati struggles as much as any team finding that diamond in the rough. But if Johnathan Joseph is any indication on how the team drafts in the secondary, then the Bengals will be just fine.
Not only do I think the Bengals will draft a cornerback, but I’d be shocked if they didn’t. Most teams have Leon Hall first on their cornerback board. Many mock drafts project the Bengals picking up Darrelle Revis (below).

With his upside and ability to return punts (the Bengals don’t have a legitimate punt returner), I think picking up Revis would create a foundation on the corners that would give this defense “instant success? that will sustain for many seasons.
