The Super Bowl Shuffle Revisited
For today’s posting, I figured I could either rehash the made-up storyline of the day, whether or not Indy’s late arrival will affect their Super Bowl preparation (as Homer Simpson would say, “BOOOORING!”)…
Or - I could take a look back at one of the most surreal and entertaining sports videos ever created: the 1985 Bears Super Bowl Shuffle.
Here’s the best online version of the video I could find, care of www.Captainfunny.com. As I saw it again, I had the following observations:
- Sweetness leads of with the first solo, and he’s fantastic. Amazing moves on an off the field. Such a shame he’s no longer with us.
- At the 1:52 mark, check out the 3 back-ups doing their best Pointer Sisters impersonation. Do you think McMahon, Singletary and some of the other starters tried to force them to wear dresses and wigs? I hope so…
- How many takes do you think it took Otis Wilson to get through his part without losing it? I’m guessing 30.
- The video is cruising along really well, then comes to a screeching halt when back-up QB Steve Fuller takes the mike. Wow. I’d rather listen to a cat caught in a dryer. And why does he keep looking back to his right? Maybe Richard Dent kept yelling, “you suck!! If you were on another team, I’d have ripped your head off by now!!”
- With the exception of Jim McMahon, ever white guy on the team looks unbelievably…uh…white.
- When the Fridge makes his appearance, I almost yelled outloud, “My God - look how THIN he is!!” Completely floored me. I guess it shouldn’t have, considering how most defensive linemen these days are twice that size (and, of course, Perry himself looks like he’s pushing 450 these days).
Just an amazing video - feel free to post your own thoughts & memories. One last bit of trivia: did you know that the song received a Grammy nomination for best Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance - Duo or Group? Unbelievable.
The artist the song lost to? Prince, who of course, is playing at half-time on Sunday. Feel free to insert your own joke here….
